Epidemiology of osteoporosis and its prevention strategy

Approximately 50% of women experience at least one bone fracture postmenopause (Nat Rev Endocrinol 2020,16(6),333).

Due to a decrease in sex hormones (estrogen) production after menopause ,womans bones are less able to retain calcium from food. To maintain the necessary level of calcium in the blood, this element passes from the bones into the blood.

In 2010, it was estimated that 22 million women and 5.5 million men in the EU had osteoporosis using the diagnostic criterion of the WHO (Arch. Osteoporos, 8:136. 10.1007/s11657-013-0136-1).

The incidence of osteopenia, i.e. loss of calcium from bone tissue at the stage preceding osteoporosis, exceeds the prevalence of osteoporosis by at least 10 times (Сurr Osteoporos Rep 2010,8(2),91). Already at the stage of osteopenia, the consequences of calcium metabolism disorders begin to manifest themselves: changes in the functioning of skeletal muscles, signs of osteoarthritis, etc.

Therefore, the prevention of osteoporosis should begin at the stage of osteopenia, without waiting for deep demineralization of the skeleton and a significant increase in the risk of fractures fraught with fatal consequences.
